Early Arab trading posts developed into sultanates. The Italian
Protectorate of Somalia, acquired from 1885 to 1927, extended
along the Indian Ocean to the Juba River. In 1949, the United
Nations approved creation of an independent Somalia and in 1950,
Italy took over trusteeship held by Britain since World War II.
On July 1, 1960 an independent Somali Republic was declared. On
October 21, 1969 a Revolutionary Council seized power in a
bloodless coup and several major companies were nationalized. A
serious drought in 1975 killed thousands of people. Somalia has
laid claim to Ogaden, the eastern region of Ethiopia, inhabited
mostly by Somalis. In 1977 the two countries fought several
battles over the region. Russian troops were expelled in 1977
and in 1978 over 1.5 million refugees entered Somalia from
Ethiopia. @
